Hi! Yep, that's me! I'm one of those chronic yo-yo weight people. And the photos to the left are me at my heaviest...5'1 216 lbs. Sizes 16 and XXL. That's a LOT of weight on a very short body. The images on the right are me, pretty much now. Down to a size 2 or 4, depending on the brand and material and a small or XS. My weight loss was from March until November, so around 8 months. I feel better than ever and I'm keeping the weight off, but I've noticed some things......weird things! Things no one else talks about. At least, not that I've heard.
So I'm going to do what most totally normal and rational people do nowadays....
I'm going to share it with the world. Here it goes... my 5 Weird Things That Happen Once You Lose Weight (That No One Talks About):
Losing weight comes with some truly amazing benefits — more energy, better health, improved labs, better sleep. But let’s be honest: there are some strange, unexpected changes no one tells you about.
If you’ve ever wondered, “Is this normal?” — the answer is yes...I think so?
Here are five weird things I noticed after weight loss that might surprise you.
1. My Shoes Became Too BIG
I feel this one is a double whammy. Your feet lose fat, but also (this is my theory) when you lose weight, there's less pressure on your feet so they're not as wide. Does anyone know if that is true? It makes sense to me!
What I definitely know is when you lose weight, the fat pads on the tops and bottoms of your feet shrink. That means:
Your shoes feel looser
Your favorite sneakers may slip off
Boots don’t fit snug around the calves anymore
Some people even drop ½–1 full shoe size. After polling others...this happens a LOT!
2. Your Collar Bones Decide to Make an Appearance
There is something dramatic and empowering about seeing collar bones again.
As fat decreases around your upper chest, shoulders, and neck, those bones become more visible.
Women often say:
“I didn’t realize I even had collar bones!”
“My necklaces sit differently now.”
It’s a small thing, but it feels like a big milestone. And they make you feel sexy! Bonus!
3. You Can Touch Your Feet Way Easier
This one catches people off guard — but makes total sense.
Less abdominal fat = more mobility.
So suddenly:
Stretching is easier
You don't have to squeeze the life out of your belly to paint your toenails without gasping for air
You can tie your shoes without holding your breath
You can reach to shave your legs, moisturize, or clip toenails without feeling cramped
Your flexibility didn’t magically improve — your body simply isn’t fighting against itself anymore. I can cross my legs now, too!
4. You Can Breathe Easier Walking Up the Stairs
This is one of the biggest day-to-day victories of weight loss.
With decreased fat around the abdomen and chest, your lungs can expand more efficiently. Your legs don't have to work as hard to lift you up each step with the decreased weight load on them.
Combined with improved cardiovascular conditioning, you may notice:
Less huffing and puffing
More stamina
Faster recovery
No more pretending to text so you can catch your breath
It’s a quiet improvement, but life-changing.
5. It Can Hurt to Lay Down (Yep, Really)
Fat is cushion. When you lose body fat — especially quickly — your body has less padding between you and the surface you’re lying on. Even in bed!
So:
Your hips may feel bony on a firm mattress
Your ribs may feel tender
Side-sleeping can feel pokey
Hard floors? Forget about it
This usually improves as your body redistributes fat and your muscles strengthen.
Is All of This Normal? Absolutely.
Your body is adapting, recalibrating, and figuring out its new “normal.” These changes don’t mean anything is wrong — they’re simply signs of transformation and should be considered non scale victories.
